The Pequin Chili: A Spicy Heritage of South America

Origins and forms of culture

The Pequin Chili, also known by names such as Piquin, Bird Pepper or Chilpequin, is a cultivated form of Tepin - the "original chili" - and originally comes from South America. In contrast to the wild Tepin chilies, the Pequin has a more elongated shape, but retains the characteristic upward-growing fruits of the wild form. This variety is a living example of the diversity and cultural history of the Capsicum annuum varieties.

Growth and yield

Pequin chilies develop into sprawling, bushy plants that can reach a height of around 70-90 cm and a width of up to one meter. Known for their high yield, they produce countless conical, thin-walled fruits that ripen from green to red and have a sweet paprika aroma. The fruits are 1 to 3 cm large and stand upright on the plant, making harvesting easier.
