When fully grown, jalapeños are usually about 15 centimeters long and two to three centimeters thick; however, some varieties grow up to 12 centimeters long and up to 3 centimeters thick. These peppers ripen from green to red. Also known as chili or aji, the jalapeño is a species of Capsicum annuum. It is typically found in Mexico and the United States and is available year-round. Jalapeños come in many varieties and can be green, yellow, orange, or red depending on how ripe they are. The most common variety of this pepper has an average Scoville value of 2,500 to 10,000 SHU (Scoville heat units).
